An impressive aquamarine stone that we picked up during one of our many buying trips to South Africa. Finding rough aquamarine in this size and grade for a reasonable price is not easy so we were very excited to have found this piece. Aquamarine is the blue variety of the mineral beryl. Translucent gem grade material is highly sought after but most aquamarine gemstones have been heated. Naturally the stone is more of a greenish blue colour but when exposed to heat it can be changed or enhanced. Some areas of translucency can be seen across the top and around the edges of this aquamarine and if you love rough minerals, this is definitely a piece you'll love having as part of your collection.Aquamarine is a hard mineral which grades 7½ - 8 on Mohs scale of mineral hardness. It's the official birthstone for the month of March and some of the largest and finest specimens ever to have been found are on display in museums around the world. In 1910 a single 550,000 carat aquamarine crystal was found in the state of Minas Gerais in Brazil.
