Rough Blue Beryl aka Aquamarine
Rough chunk of aquamarine that we picked up on a recent visit to South Africa. Aquamarine is the blue variety of the mineral beryl, fine gem grade material is highly sought after but many of the finest stones will have been heat treated in order to enhance or change their colour.
This stone has a vitreous lustre and some areas of translucency can be seen across the top and around the edges.
Aquamarine is a relatively hard mineral which grades 7½ - 8 on Mohs scale of mineral hardness. It's the official birthstone for the month of March and some of the largest and finest specimens to ever have been found are on display in museums around the world.
