Agate one of the oldest of all minerals has been used by man for at least two thousand years. In ancient times as well as being carried as a talisman stones were also used for seals, containers, beads and gemstones. Today its primary use is for lapidary purposes and it's particularly well known for its bright colours and decorative qualities. With that said stones can also be found in shades of black, brown, white and grey and whilst best known for its band-like patterns, not all agate stone is banded.
Agate is a variety of the mineral chalcedony that's made up of silicon dioxide otherwise known as quartz. The colours and patterns that make this stone so desirable are caused by the presence of trace impurities of other minerals therefore in its purest form agate is colourless. With the presence of iron the quartz crystals turn red or brown, manganese turns them pink and with the addition of chromium they turn a deep shade of green.
