Colourful Agate Stones
Wonderfully tactile and highly polished agate stone pieces from South Africa. Each translucent stone exhibits a vitreous lustre hence its appearance and texture is similar to glass. Whilst agate can occur in a wide variety of different colours it can also be found in varying shades of black, brown, white and grey. Sadly many of these stones end up being dyed because some believe these neutral colours are not sufficiently appealing to the wider commercial market. At Stone Mania we never knowingly buy agate stones that have been artificially coloured and to the best of our knowledge, the colour of these pieces is completely natural.
Not all agates exhibit amazing colours but what they lack in colour they often make up with other curious or fascinating characteristics. This popular stone has evolved over millions of years and Mother Nature has done a pretty good job. Rocks and minerals appeal to people for different reasons and there's so much more to the mineral agate than just its colour. It's important to note that dyeing is completely different to heating which is a common practice used to enhance or change the colour of rocks and minerals. Stones have been dyed and exposed to different heat treatments around the entire world for thousands of years.
Although agate stone grades 7 on Mohs scale of mineral hardness it's very brittle so must be handled with care.
