K2 Granite Stones from Northern Pakistan
K2 also known as K2 granite is a distinctive stone named after the world's second highest mountain. K2 is part of the Karakoram Range close to the border of Pakistan and China.
A particularly eye-catching stone, it's white granite with distinctive orb-like markings of blue azurite. These two materials very rarely occur together.
In some stone the azurite is so distinctive it almost looks as if the granite has been stained with blue dye. Green malachite can also be seen when K2 granite is examined carefully.
The azurite occurs as a blue stain as opposed to being an inclusion. For this reason although azurite is a relatively soft mineral, in K2 it has the same hardness as the granite.
K2 granite grades 6 on Mohs scale of hardness but is prone to signs of wear if not handled carefully.
It's found at the base of a very steep slope in a part of the Karakoram Range of K2 that's rarely visited.
When this stone first made an appearance some years ago, geologists were not convinced the blue colour was natural. This thread on Mindat the world's largest database of rocks and minerals makes an interesting read. The participants are geologists or have extensive knowledge of rocks and minerals.
K2 is sometimes called K2 jasper. This trade name is a misnomer because it contains no jasper at all.
These highly polished K2 granite stones are size medium. Size can vary from piece to piece.
Please note the azurite cannot be seen in every single tumbled stone. We always do our best to use pieces with some blue colouration but it's not always possible.
