Although a relatively hard stone which grades 7 on Mohs scale, smoky quartz is brittle so must be handled carefully. Its colour does have a tendency to fade if exposed to bright sunlight for long periods of time so consideration should be given as to where this crystal is placed.
It's worth mentioning that some smoky quartz that's being solid is in fact clear quartz that has been irradiated (heated) which changes the colour to smokey brown. This is a natural rough smoky quartz crystal.
