Agate one of the oldest of all minerals has been used by man for at least two thousand years. In ancient times as well as being carried as a talisman stones were also used for seals, containers, beads and gemstones. Today its primary use is for lapidary purposes and it's well known for its bright colours and decorative qualities.
The stones we enjoy looking at and handling are millions of years old and have been subjected to incredible geological stresses and strains.
Agates have been found on every continent sometimes in great abundance. There are hundreds of different varieties many of which have their own unique characteristics. The UK particularly Scotland has huge reserves and these stones have been polished for use in jewellery for hundreds of years.
Some of the oldest agate stones can be found in rocks which date back as far as 410 million years.
