Three kambaba jasper gem-grade cabochons. These highly polished grade A stones exhibit a vitreous lustre so reflect light instead of absorbing it.
The back of each stone has been polished for smoothness so the lustre is dull. This means it absorbs light instead of reflecting it.
Kambaba gemstones of this size and particularly this grade are difficult to find. These pieces were cut for us from rough stone.
Kambaba jasper is also known as crocodile jasper, green stromatolite jasper and occasionally star galaxy jasper. The name star galaxy jasper was created by stone cutters in Jaipur in India where many of the world's gemstones are cut and polished.
In Madagascar where this material is found it's also known as kabamba after the area where is was originally discovered.
