Pyrite with Isometric Crystals
The isometric or cube-shaped crystals in this pyrite mineral exhibit distinctive striations. Striations are fine grooves or ridges that appear as parallel lines. They're a typical characteristic of the mineral pyrite. When present on transparent crystals they can sometimes be mistaken for scratches.
Although pyrite occurs in several crystal habits, cubes are amongst the most common. This popular and relatively common mineral can be found in small quantities in a wide variety of geological environments.
The term fools gold has long been associated with pyrite. The earliest published use may have been in the first edition of "The Friend". This Quaker magazine has been published continuously since 1843. The article which featured pyrite was talking about the gold mines of North Carolina.
