Bloodstone Crystals aka Heliotrope
Also known as heliotrope, bloodstone is a cryptocrystalline variety of quartz.
This distinctive stone is a dark green coloured mineral with reddish-brown inclusions caused by impurities of iron oxides.
Bloodstone takes on a high polish and is used for decorative purposes and for its healing properties.
In the first century AD bloodstone was claimed to preserve health and offer protection against deception. During the Middle Ages it was widely used for sculptures which depicted flogging, whipping, lashing and martyrdom.
The red inclusions were likened to blood hence were associated with the blood of Christ. For this reason bloodstone was associated with the church and given religious importance.
Once used to prevent nosebleeds and as a remedy for haemorrhaging and inflammatory diseases, today bloodstone is still used for blood related disorders. It's considered to be an exceptionally powerful healing crystal suitable for complete revitalisation.
Bloodstone is a dark green mineral with red markings caused by iron oxides. In tumbled stones it's important to note that red markings may not be present in every single piece.
The size of these bloodstone crystals can vary from piece to piece. They're a medium sized stone. We also have a large and extra large bloodstone tumbles available.
