Red Stilbite Mineral
Red stilbite is a mineral that we don't know too much about but having seen this exceptional piece at one of our suppliers in South Africa it immediately caught our attention.
The origins of the name stilbite come from the Greek word "to shine" and relate to its vitreous to pearly lustre. Lustre describes the way that light interacts with the surface of a rock or mineral. Stilbite which can be translucent to transparent occurs in several different colours and we have in recent years seen some pretty impressive specimens in museums in both the UK and USA.
Although we've had red stilbite in our collection before, it has always been combined with the mineral apophyllite.
Relatively soft, red stilbite grades 3½ to 4 on Mohs scale of mineral hardness and its availability is classified as widespread.
