Polished Quartz Mineral

Highly polished quartz rock almost completely transparent and void of fractures or inclusions.  The surface of this common natural mineral is subtly rippled and the underside is covered with a layer of dark coloured crystals.

Originating from South Africa, this piece is sure to be appreciated by anyone who's drawn to quartz.  Colourless varieties of the mineral quartz which are either transparent or translucent are also known as rock crystal.

Our second photo was taken whilst this quartz rock was upside down and the camera is pointed at one side of the stone.  The brown colouration at the bottom of the rock which appears to be inside of the quartz is actually a reflection of the crystals at the top of the photo.

Quartz is the third most common mineral in the earth's crust after ice and feldspar.  Its optical and electrical properties have led to it being widely used in lenses and prisms.  The Roman author, naturalist and philosopher Pliny the Elder believed quartz was a kind of ice that would never melt and the fact that it could be found near glaciers in the Alps supported his theory.
