Polished Quartz Crystal
An impressive chunk of polished quartz from our collection of crystals rocks and minerals. Rock quartz as the colourless translucent variety of the mineral quartz is also known can be particularly challenging to photograph and sadly some of our photos really don't do the respective pieces the justice they truly deserve. This fascinating piece is void of fractures and inclusions and was meticulously chosen during one of our many trips to South Africa.
The largest face of this quartz rock is almost nine centimetres wide and for many rock or mineral enthusiasts it's quite exciting to be able to look right through a solid piece of quartz that has taken millions of years to evolve. After ice and the mineral feldspar, quartz is the most common mineral in the Earth's crust and it also has the largest number of gemstone varieties.
Only transparent colourless varieties of quartz are correctly known as rock crystal, varieties which are included or exhibit colour tend to either be known simply as quartz or have their own specific name. Some of the best known examples include rose quartz, smoky quartz, citrine and amethyst to name just a few.
