Polished Petrified Wood
A meticulously chosen piece of petrified wood from South Africa. This piece is highly polished on one side only and exhibits wonderful colour. Due to the way that we've positioned the slice to minimise reflection, its polish cannot really be fully appreciated. Petrified wood is a fascinating mineral and one that we love choosing for our collection.
Fossilised wood as it's also sometimes known is fossil in which the original organic matter has slowly been replaced with natural minerals. The process is known as petrifaction and takes place when fallen plants and trees become covered with sediment or volcanic ash. Although initially preserved due to them being starved of oxygen, the organic material slowly begins to decay and as it does so it's quickly replaced with minerals that have been carried in ground water. As the water dries up the minerals gradually crystallize. The process of petrifaction is sometimes misunderstood and it's important to emphasize that it's not the organic matter that's turning into stone but the minerals which replace it.
No two pieces of petrified wood are ever the same and these natural curiosities make great gifts for anyone with an interest in the natural world.
