Large Prehnite Rock
An unusually large prehnite mineral specimen that we came across purely by chance but having seen it, we definitely wanted it for our collection.
Prehnite was first discovered in the Cape of Good Hope by Dutchman Hendrik von Prehn. Governor of the Cape of Good Hope and an avid mineral collector, this new find was named after him in 1788. He is believed to have been the first person to have imported Prehn "ite" to Europe.
Prehnite is relatively hard and grades 6 to 6½ on Mohs scale of mineral hardness. Specimens of this size are not seen that often but please note, this is a hefty rock which weighs in at over two kilos.
