Agate which is one of the oldest of all minerals has been used by man for at least two thousand years. In ancient times as well as being carried as a talisman it was also used for seals, containers, beads and gemstones. Today its primary use is as a lapidary material and it's a stone that's well known for its bright colours and decorative qualities. With that said it can often be found in shades of black, brown, white and grey and whilst best known for its distinctive bands, not all agate is banded.
Agate is a variety of the mineral chalcedony that's made up of silicon dioxide otherwise known as quartz. In its purest form it's colourless so any colour and banding that can be seen is the result of trace impurities of other minerals. Iron turns the quartz crystals red or brown, manganese turns them pink and with the presence of chromium they turn a deep shade of green.
