Sometimes when choosing polished cabochons for our collection of ladies gemstone pendants we find a stone that attracts our attention simply because it's unusual or has something else about it that we find curious or interesting. Of course we also have to ask ourselves whether it's going to make an appealing ladies pendant but years of experience has taught us that when it comes to gemstones, everyone has their own taste.
Having a keen interest in rocks and minerals was probably the reason why this particular stone attracted our attention and having been buying it for the best part of ten years now, we are no closer to knowing for certain exactly what type of stone it is. What we do know however is that it's surprisingly popular and the pendants that we have made are never around for long. Having done a considerable amount of research online we have established that many businesses refer to this stone as mariam fossil, elephant skin jasper and calligraphy stone but these are nothing more than names which have been created by retailers or stone suppliers in India where the vast majority of the world's cabochons for use in gemstone jewellery are processed.
When doing research for the crystals, rocks and minerals in our collection we're very careful about where we source information from. Sadly so much of what you read online on this subject is inaccurate and despite these names being widely used, there's no hard facts to support any of what has been written about this stone. Having asked about it on various mineralogy and geology forums that we use, nobody can give us any definitive answers. So although no closer to finding out geologically exactly what it is, it's a gemstone that still attracts our attention whenever we're buying cabochons for our collection.
The markings in this mysterious polished cabochon are certainly unique and there's also a curious cavity which goes deep into the stone on the left side. Mounted in a fine sterling silver setting, this pendant may not be everyone's cup of tea but we're confident that for someone, it will be exactly what they've been looking for. The reason why it's been added to our Bargain Basement is because there's a scuff mark on the left side of the stone which should have been polished out but has clearly been overlooked. Although it looks quite prominent in our photo due to our powerful camera lens and studio lighting, it's actually hardly visible in natural daylight and we only noticed it after having looked at the photograph.
As with anything that you buy online from Stone Mania, should you not be completely satisfied with this ladies gemstone pendant, it may be returned for a full refund (T&C's apply).
