Garnet has been around for thousands of years and is mentioned in early biblical writings where it's called 'carbunculus' meaning little spark.  It is said that Noah used a lantern made from Garnet (because of its luminosity) to safely steer his ark through the night and it was thought to have been one of the gemstones in the breastplate of the high priest also known as the breastplate of Aaron.  Garnet has also been found in jewellery dating from the Ancient Egyptian, Greek and Roman eras.

The name Garnet may have come from either the Middle English word 'gernet' meaning 'dark red' or the Latin 'granatus' meaning 'grain' which is possibly a reference to the punica granatum otherwise known as pomegranate. This plant has small red seeds which are similar in shape, size and colour to some Garnet crystals.

Garnets of this grade boast the most incredible deep red colour which is why it has been keenly sought after for thousands of years.  Unknown to many, it can occur in almost any colour except blue.

This exceptional gemstone has a vitreous lustre so it could be described as having a 'glassy' appearance, it is also translucent and has the deepest of red colour.  A Garnet of this grade in this size is quite rare and it's certainly not a gemstone which is readily available.

Mounted in a fine sterling silver setting which boasts our own 'SM' hallmark from the London Assay Office, this Garnet makes a beautifully elegant and unique pendant.
