Amethyst is an ancient gemstone which is one of the most popular and highly prized varieties of Quartz.  The birthstone for the month of February, its name comes from the ancient Greek word "amethustos" meaning "unintoxicated" or "not drunk" hence the ancient Greeks believed it would protect them from becoming drunk hence wine goblets and other amulets were often made from Amethyst.
