Aventurescence

Aventurescence is an optical reflectance effect seen in certain gemstones.  The effect amounts to a metallic glitter arising from minute, preferentially oriented mineral platelets within the gemstone.  These platelets are so numerous that they also influence its colour.  In Aventurine or Aventurine Quartz (which is actually a type of Quartzite) chrome-bearing fuchsite causes the gem to be green and various iron oxides result in it being red.

The words aventurine and aventurescence come from the Italian "a ventura," meaning "by chance."  This is with reference to the chance discovery of aventurine glass or Goldstone at some point in the 18th century.  Goldstone is still manufactured today as an artificial imitation of the later discovered Aventurine (Aventurine Quartz) and also Aventurine Feldspar which is better known as Sunstone
