Chromium is a chemical element which is a steely grey coloured, lustrous, hard metal that takes a high polish and has a high melting point. It is also odourless, tasteless and malleable. Its name comes from the Greek word "chrōma" meaning colour, because many of its compounds are intensely coloured. It was discovered in 1797.
