An intaglio is a gemstone, usually semi-precious that has been carved normally with images or inscriptions on one face only. This was considered to be a luxury art form in the ancient world and an important one during some later periods. It is also called gemstone carving with the artists being known as gemstone-cutters. References to antique gemstones and intaglios in a jewellery context, will almost always mean carved gemstones.
