Cameo can be a method of carving, or an object such as an engraved gemstone, an item of jewellry or vessel which has been made in this manner. It nearly always features a raised image contrasting with an intaglio which has a negative image. Originally and still relevant to historical work, cameo only referred to works where the top image was of a contrasting colour to the background.
