The Zuni or A:shiwi (as they refer to themselves in their own language) are a Native American Indian tribe who are one of the Pueblo peoples most of whom live in the region surrounding the Zuni River, a tributary of the Little Colorado River in Western New Mexico. Zuni is 55 km (35 miles) south of Gallup, New Mexico. According to the 2000 Census, there were approximately 7,790 people in the postal code area of the Zuni reservation and their language is still spoken by more than 6000 people.
