Pharaoh is the title used for the ancient rulers of Egypt. It means "Great House" which originally referred to the king's palace but by the reign of Thutmose III, it had become a form of address for the king himself.
The idea of kingship and the divinity of the pharaoh were central to Ancient Egyptian society and religion with each king considered to be a combination of the divine and the mortal.
