The Hamersley Ranges is a mountainous region of the Pilbara, Western Australia. The range runs from the Fortescue river in the northeast, 460 km south. The range is home to Mount Bruce and Mount Meharry (Western Australia's highest peak), both of which stand at about 1,300 m (4,100 ft).
The Hamersley Ranges are located within the majestic Karijini National Park, four and a half hours drive south of Port Hedland. Features of the Ranges are the spectacular gorges dating back 2000 million years, carved by the waters of the Fortescue and other rivers. The sheer walls of rock are layered in colours from red to green and blue to pink in the changing sunlight.
The gorges are up to 100 metres deep with the water flow at their bases sometimes only one metre wide. Others have wide crystal clear pools reflecting the blue skies.
Hamersley National Park which is home to red kangaroos and dingoes lies within the mountains, as do huge deposits of iron ore. Most of Australia's iron is produced from the Hamersley Range.
