Crystal healing is an alternative medicine technique which uses gemstones (or crystals) for the intended purpose of physical, mental, emotional and spiritual healing.  When placed on specific areas of the body called "chakras", they are said to direct the flow of energy in a particular part of the body and bring balance to a person's energy.  Ultimately they are used to cleanse away bad or negative energy which is believed can be the cause of an illness.  Clearing bad spiritual energy is believed to alleviate the physical ailment.  It is important to emphasize that crystal healing is not a substitute for conventional medicine.

Chakra is a Hindu term meaning "spiritual energy".  There are believed to be seven basic energy centres in the body, each having a specific colour associated with it.  Some crystal healers match the colour of the crystal to the colour of each chakra which is believed to further enhance the flow of energy. 

Crystal healing has been in existence since ancient times and has been used by many different cultures.  It is a holistic therapy which means the focus is on the individual as a whole, rather than on physical symptoms alone.  The aim of crystal healing is to restore wholeness, balance and health on levels of emotions, mind, spirit as well as the physical body and this is why it is considered complementary to regular medicines and not an alternative.  It often involves some form of change in a persons well being which may be through the relief of stress and tensions, through revitalisation, relaxation or establishing a greater amount of peace and harmony.

Crystal healers are not permitted or trained to diagnose physical ailments, they do however assess the condition of the bio-magnetic field of a client before choosing appropriate crystals to help bring it back into balance and harmony.  Since the state of the bio-magnetic field relates to and influences the state of the physical body, this process will help activate, support and often accelerate the natural self-healing processes.  The bio-magnetic field, also known as the electro magnetic field or aura, has been discussed and contemplated within the realm of healing and philosophy for thousands of years.  It is only fairly recently that science has proven that it must exist around every physical body and organism, thereby helping with amongst other things, to validate crystal healing.

In Egypt Jade amulets were found in ancient tombs and burial chambers because of the belief that they could guide the soul in the afterworld.
