Mineral

mineral

The rocks of which planet Earth is made up of are all minerals.  A mineral is defined as a naturally occurring solid formed through geological processes that has a specific chemical composition and a distinctive internal crystal structure

Most minerals are chemical compounds made up of two or more chemical elements although some minerals which include copper, gold and silver occur as a single element.  Copper is believed to have been the first metal to be used by man.  Although there are more than 4000 minerals which have been identified, only around 100 are common.
