Amazonite

amazonite 1a
Amazonite is variety of Feldspar which is an important group of minerals in rock formation that account for over half of the Earth's crust.  It is not particularly common and in the past came almost exclusively from the area of Miyask in the Ilmen mountains, 50 miles south west of Chelyabinsk in Russia. More recently, Amazonite has been found in Colorado and a few other localities in the United States and also Madagascar.

Its name unsurprisingly comes from the Amazon river in Brazil. Back in the middle 1800's, a green mineral was discovered along the banks of the river and the term Amazon stone and subsequently Amazonite became attached to it.

Other sources are Canada, Namibia, Australia, Italy and the Ural mountains of Russia.

Amazonite enhances the ability to clearly communicate the wisdom of the heart, it helps to release fear and anxiety as well as negative energy blockages.  This healing gemstone is said to bring luck to gamblers or anyone taking a chance to ensure success and if you are emotional, it can help regulate your ups and downs and enable you to be more balanced with your feelings. It balances the male female energies or yin yang, helping you to see and use your own abilities to their fullest potential and can also be beneficial for tooth decay and calcium deficiency as well as relaxing muscle spasms and providing a clear flow of energy through the nervous system.  It heals and opens both the heart and throat chakras to enhance loving communication.

The Pikes Peak district of Colorado in the U.S.A became the most important mining source after 1876 and samples from this area boasted impressive purity and size which eventually forced competing Russian mineral dealers out of business.

Amazonite beads were found amongst other items dating back to the 5th millennium BC. and it is still a popular gemstone for use in jewellery today.  The Ancient Egyptians used Amazonite for the carving of deities and it was also considered a catalyst between the living and the Gods.

It is graded 6 to 6.5 on Mohs scale of mineral hardness
