There is some uncertainty over where the name Topaz originated from, some say it comes from the Sanskrit word meaning 'fire' whilst others link it to the Red Sea Island of Topazios (Zabargad or St. John's Island) where Peridot has been found. However it basically means 'a yellow gem' and it's highly probable that many pieces of Citrine and Smoky Quartz have over the years been incorrectly sold as Golden Topaz and Smoky Topaz. The names Imperial and Precious Topaz are now often used to distinguish between real Topaz and the Quartz look-a-likes.
Contrary to popular belief, many varieties are actually heat treated (but not all) in order to obtain the colour of choice. The most popular colour is blue and the lightest shade of blue is known as Sky Blue which is the most readily available. Swiss Blue has a deeper colour and is slightly rarer and London Blue which is a deep inky blue, is the rarest. Fine golden yellow coloured Topaz which is known as Imperial Topaz is relatively scarce and the most valuable colour is Pink. Many other gemstones are routinely heat treated to enhance or change their colour including some of the world's finest Rubies and Sapphires.
Blue Topaz is popular for use in crystal healing where it is known as "the stone of true love and success in all endeavours". It can promote individuality and creativity whilst providing for confidence in trusting ones decisions. It is also said to replace negativity with love and joyfulness.
The largest gemstone ever to be found was named El Dorado and was found in Brazil in 1984. It weighs 6.2 kg and belongs to the British Royal Collection. The most famous is the giant Braganza diamond in the Portuguese crown which was as its name suggests, at first thought to be a Diamond.
Topaz is kown to have been around for thousands of years and is believed to have been one of the gemstones in the breastplate of the high priest. It is also particularly hard hence is perfect for use in jewellery.
The birthstone for the month of November along with Citrine, it also represents the anniversary of the 4th year of marriage. The blue variety is one of the birthstones for the month of December with the other being Turquoise.
The Minas Gerais area of Brazil is the world's premier supplier but it can also be found in many other locations worldwide.
It has a vitreous lustre and is graded 8 on Mohs scale of mineral hardness.
