Rose Quartz

Rose Quartz gemstones have the softest of pink colour and they are used extensively in a wide variety of gemstone jewellery right around the world.  One of the all time classic semi precious stones, Rose Quartz is one of the most highly sought after varieties Quartz.  Transparent or translucent, it is rarely found in crystals but when it is, they are usually extremely small which is puzzling because Quartz is generally known for having large crystals.  The only place in the world where Rose Quartz crystals have been found is the Minas Gerais area of Brazil.  It is instead mostly found as a "massive aggregate" which means it has no definitive shape and is just one large mass.  Its sometimes milky appearance could possibly be due to tiny, needle like inclusions of rutile which when present, can sometimes cause six rayed stars but only when these semi precious stones have been cut en cabochon.

The colour of Rose Quartz is unique and unlike any other pink mineral, the colour is believed to be caused by tiny impurities of manganese, iron and titanium.  Being sensitive to heat means it should be protected from prolonged exposure to bright light as this can cause its colour to fade.

Although carved since ancient times, little is known about Rose Quartz.  Beads found in Mesopotamia date back to 7000 BC. and it is also believed to have been used by the Assyrians in 800-600 BC as well as in ancient Rome where it was popular for making seals.

Rose Quartz is rarely faceted as this can result in it becoming slightly cloudy so more usually, it is cut en cabochon.  Having said that, when the finest grade gemstones are faceted, they can be extremely beautiful.

In crystal healing Rose Quartz is considered to be the ultimate stone of love and peace which has no limits or bounderies.  One of the most important semi precious stones for the healing of the heart, it will work gently with the chakras to remove negativity.  It promotes receptivity to beauty of all kinds and is a romantic gemstone which attracts love.  It is also one of the greatest emotional healers which releases unexpressed emotions and heartache.  For those who have loved and lost, it will comfort your grief, draw off negative energy and replace it with loving vibes.  Rose Quartz is excellent for helping you through a mid-life crisis, it's useful for balancing yin and yang energy, can breath new life into the physical body and help to heal emotional wounds.

Although found in Madagascar, India, Germany and the USA, most of the world's supply of Rose Quartz now comes from Brazil.

Being graded 7 on Mohs scale of mineral hardness makes it a perfect choice for use in gemstone jewellery.
