Rhodonite is a manganese silicate mineral that can range in colour from the lightest of pink to the deepest scarlet. Gemstones often feature distinctive inclusions of black manganese dioxide which can be seen in veins or patches on the surfaces of the gemstone. Its name comes from the Greek word 'rhodon' meaning rose.
Rhodonite was first discovered in the 17th century but it became particularly popular during the 18th century in the Russian court and was for many years considered to be the country's national gemstone. During this time it was not only used for jewellery but also for architectural ornamentation.
In crystal healing Rhodonite is used for activating love energies and also for dispelling tension and anxiety. It can help one establish an inner balance and is sometimes referred to as the 'gemstone of peace' as it is said to help resolve conflicts. It provides loving and emotional energy, soothes heartache and grief, relieves stress and calms nightmares. Rhodonite's other healing properties include helping with emphysema, arthritis and joint problems. It is also believed to improve speech and hearing.
Rhodonite is found in Australia, Brazil, Canada, Italy, India, Madagascar, New Zealand and Tanzania. It is graded 5.5 to 6.5 on Mohs scale of mineral hardness.
