Dumortierite

dumortierite 1a
First identified in 1881 by a French mineralogist who named this rich blue gemstone after the palaeontologist Eugene Dumortier (1803-1873).

Due to its similarity to the fabric denim, Dumortierite is sometimes referred to as the 'denim stone'.  It is often mistaken for Sodalite and has also been known to be a substitute for Lapis Lazuli which is generally more expensive. In industry it is used in the manufacture of high grade porcelain and is categorized in some gemstone publications as being a rare mineral.

In crystal healing Dumortierite is said to promote accomplishments, positive attitude, courage, trust, harmony and can help one to cope with panic and fear.  It enhances organizational abilities, including precision and self discipline and also helps one to become more business like, systematic, tidy and methodical.  It is said to help reduce excitability and eliminate stubbornness.  Dumortierite is also excellent for patience and for allowing for the recognition of the potential of any or all with whom one is involved.

Dumortierite is found in France, Canada, Italy, Madagascar, Namibia, Norway, Poland, Russia, Sri Lanka, and the United States.

It is graded 8 on Mohs scale of mineral hardness which makes it ideal for use in jewellery.
