aquamarine 1a
Aquamarine is part of the mineral group known as Beryl and its name comes from a Latin word meaning 'water of the sea'.  Gemstones can range in colour from green through to blue and the finest grade gemstones have a tendency to be more translucent.

Historically many superstitions and legends have been associated with Aquamarine and some ancient sailors believed it came directly from the treasure chests of mermaids, they also believed her lower fish-like body was pure Aquamarine. Many would carry gemstones as a good luck talisman as it was believed to protect them from the dangers associated with being at sea as well as from sea sickness. They also believed that sleeping with a piece of Aquamarine under one's pillow would ensure sound sleep. Even today it is believed to be in tune with the ocean and is said to provide soothing calmness as well as helping to alleviate phobias and fears.

During the Middle Ages people thought it could overcome the effects of poison and it has long been associated with happiness and everlasting youth. It is a gemstone of creativity and self-expression and helps those burdened with great responsibility by giving strength, wisdom and clarity of mind. It is also said to help those who are judgmental become more tolerant of others as well as inspiring peace and tranquillity. Aquamarine has a soothing effect on the newly married assisting them in working out their differences hence ensuring a long and happy marriage and it is believed to re-awaken love in long-married couples.  It also signifies the making of new friends.
