Rutilated quartz is a variety of included quartz which basically means it's quartz which features inclusions. One of the most common inclusions to be found in quartz is rutile. These needle-like quartz crystals can be thick or thin, pale gold to rich orangey brown and arranged in dense or sparse patterns. They give an appearance of fine golden hair within the gemstone and often form fascinating and complex patterns. They have been known to be referred to as Venus Hair or Cupid's darts.
Inclusions are not uncommon within quartz and there are literally hundreds of different included quartz varieties. These inclusions can be other minerals, air, water, tar, petroleum and in the case of amber, even insects. Rutile is a titanium dioxide mineral which occurs within quartz. The difference in hardness between the two materials and also because of the way the rutiles grow inside, mean the surface of the quartz is often pitted.
