jasper.jpgJasper is a cryptocrystalline variety of the mineral quartz.  It's an opaque gemstone which comes in an endless variety of different colours and patterns.  Very fine grained mudstone or siltstone can produce ultra fine particulate jaspers that result in high polish and nearly invisible grain.  These are sometimes called porcelain jaspers and are among the finest quality jaspers.

In the Bible, (Exodus 28.20) jasper is mentioned as being one of the gemstones in the 'ephod' or High Priest's Breastplate.  This is one of eight ritual garments worn by the Israelite and later the Jewish High Priest while serving in the Jewish Temple in Jerusalem.  Jasper was a favourite gemstone in ancient times and is referenced in Greek, Hebrew, Assyrian and Latin literature.

With regards to crystal healing, jasper is believed to help in balancing the mineral content of the body and with regulating the supplies of iron, sulphur, zinc and manganese.  The native American indians believed it to be a highly sacred gemstone and some revered it as a helper which allowed astral journeys to commence.
