The Russians first discovered charoite in 1947 in the Murun mountains in Yakutia, near the Charo River Valley in the former Soviet Union (Republic of Sakha, Siberia). This is the only place in the world where charoite is found.  This part of Russia is known for its forbidding climate and terrain and as a traditional place of exile for political prisoners.

Charoite was only introduced to the Western market in 1978 and quickly became a keenly sought after gemstone.  The world of crystal healing quickly became interested in charoite and it now boasts a long list of healing and spiritual properties.

Charoite is one of the few gemstones that is so distinctive in colour and pattern that it can be easily identified solely by sight.  It is formed from limestone by the process of contact metamorphism and since this is a relatively common geological phenomenon, it is not completely clear why charoite is not found anywhere else in the world.  Apparently the particular limestone in that area had unique chemical properties and that's why it only formed there.  To date, gemmologists have also not been able to ascertain the exact chemical or structural reason for its purple colour.

Charoite is known as the gemstone of transformation and stone of power.  In particular it transforms negative emotions such as anger and fear into positive feelings.  It is also a gemstone of inspiration, bringing enhanced creativity, spiritual growth and showing new possibilities even in old situations.  Charoite sustains ones attention span and allows us to distinguish facts from fiction.  It also helps one to realize that as one door closes, another opens.

Charoite allows us to see clearly which brings with it enhanced self-esteem and helps release one from victimization.  It can also enhance or bring courage, inner strength and appropriate assertiveness.  In the psychic world, it is used for entity release or rescue work, clairvoyance and prophesy.

Charoite is graded 5 to 6 on Mohs scale of mineral hardness.
